It began in 1964, with Dole’s Standard Fruit and Steamship Company which operated as Vacaro Line. Vacaro specialized in break bulk, mainly perishables and temperature-sensitive cargoes. In the early 1980s, Vacaro Line became Intercontinental Transportation Services, advancing from break bulk to containerized capabilities. I.T.S. was designed to grow with the booming market, and it did. Then, in 1992, Dole Ocean Cargo Express was created as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dole Food Company, Inc. capable of handling all types of cargo between continents.
